While the making of any claim of being an exact science is difficult to support, the practical usefulness of this approach should be obvious to all whose interests involve the understanding of human nature and what the hidden aspects of it may be  that lie behind personality and certain behaviors. Each SZ Reagent photo has a code on the the back. that the test administrator has to transcible into a ingenious grid, where a subject's choices form a "Psychogram", that is then useful for interpretation by counselors, therapists and psychometrists. Szondi Test "Uni-tendencies" as tool to study personality by exaggerated  examples.\\ A uni-tendency is repsented, as an avoidence projection pared with a like or dislike "decided" coice. In each SZ Vector their are four such possabilities do to the way the test grid is structered. To understand the 'exaggeration' It is useful to see this setting as representing a shift of the control or influence inherent in that SZ factor to the direction set factor paired with it. [0][+]. [0][-], [+][0], [-][0]

Dr. Szondi speculated, that there was an intuitive language of choice, a preverbal mode of communication, left over from mankind's ancestors, which made the like and dislike of facial photos of gene set hereditary lines reacted to, as if a mirror of the personality of the subject observing them, when they were viewed in a certan sequence procedure that is to be followed to get the data properly positioned into a psychogram, he called a 'profile', and which, once correctly arraingced, as belonging to eight psychiatric types, can be  then interpreted by persons knowledgeable in this method. A data base of thousands of such psychograms were taken across many differed populations and clinical case types, to serve as keys for decoding when decoded, then may serve to reflect a persons drives, which in turn reflect that person's strivings, traits and needs. This then when correctly understood represents that person's larger psychological drive aspects, his vercisitudes. The Szondi test therfore is to be conceptual as both a drive/impulse psychology and an analysis of vercisitudes.In a further intuitive jump he offered that a person's choice of love mates, friendships, occupation types, and symptoms were driven by one's gene ancestors deermined drives existing  within the constraints of his environment, hence also his thoeories were a measuring of a persons trajectory to his ultimate fate and forms of existence. Thus also a "fate analysis". . At times, he called this approach "Fate-Analytic", to make clear its difference from Freudian and Jungian Psychoanalysis very dominant  in psychiary and psychology at the time. One choice each side is still considered as being an 'open'.

The four Tri-Tendencies in the Contact/Cyclic/Polar/ Vector

The four settings that are-- "Tri-Tendencies" in the Contact/Cyclic/Polar/Vector have a recognizable influence that deserves close attention.  While here appears various; sexual issues, abuse, cheating, relationship and mood issues/symptoms, one needs to keep in mind that interpretations just from this end of a person's Szondi Test profile can be misleading. Understanidly all intra-personality functions affect each other. However the, Sexual/Gender Vector, stands the one most intimately bound with the Contact/Cyclic/Polar Vector. On the Szondi Profile Grid the left most one is the Sexual 'S' and the right most one as 'C'. With a middle placement of Paroxymal/Emotional 'P' and Ego as 'SCH' where SCH is a reference to schizophrene inheritance. Importantly this  middle 'P' and 'SCH' Vectors act to moderate and censor both the Sexual and the Contact drives, every human has, varying only in proportion as to ultimately influence the way person the way s/he thinks, feels and acts within the path way permitted by his early conditioning and existing social pressures. Of clinical importance are the non-adjusted or symptomatic casations, where inappropreate or exaggerated strivings, cause perils to the individual, his relationships, or long term to end in an undesirable or dangerous form of existance.  C8= A mid-frequency occurrence in the general population.  For the average adjusted person, a less troublesome setting than diagnonal split =[d-][m+] or the uni-tendencies.  *Core = [d-][m+]=incestous/maternal like/oral socialized. *Like Affinity= [m+]=preference for oral socializations.  *Dislike Affinity=[d-][m-]=loyal, stubborn, pessimism, suicidal thinking.revolt under some pressures *Avoided prong=if inversion asserts, depression, lonelyness, sadistic or harsh moments.

C 12 = infrequent in general population. *Core =Analsadist raw core at times active. *Like Affinity= [d+][m+] readiness to shift to oral socialized   potently the muti-objective desires of [d+][m+] *Dislike Affinity.[m-]-resignation, revolt, suicidal thoughs. *Avoided prong:  [d-] Potential inversions, as attempts at lofty, conservative behaviors. Usually stress, drug or hormonal triggered.

C14= infrequent in general population. *Core =[d-][m+] Incestouos type oral socialization preferred, *Like Affinity; {d+}[m+] Multi-Object seeking, and strong oral socialization user.{d+!} *Dislike Affinity; [d-] anal stingyness, picky, conservative *Avoided prong: Abcent lower part of the harsh anal-sadistic inclinations may suddenly switch to, when under stress pressure, alcohol, drugs or hormonal shifts,

Our definition of the Ego for the infant is the developed awareness of the difference between one self and others. as infancy changes into childhood, along with all the features of growth, metabolic, neurological, hormonal, there is evidence of some awareness of fundamental needs and a searching to satisfy them. This is the basis for the belief there is an early 'pre verbal' or 'primitive' Ego
Within a few months perhaps as the developing brain readies for later developments of thinking and language (the later) unique to mankind. A system of impulse handing also develops concurrently. This early Ego appears to expand its controlling and adapting powers exponentially as language and basic thinking skills are acquired. At the same time the first 'primary' relations to significant others. partially remain and are not automatically over thrown and are carried over into the sequential development stages.
To set these unfolding stages into perspective for us Susan Deri translated the Szondi Test signs belonging to the Ego sphere (Sch) and putting aside the issues belonging to the three Szondi Vectors Sexual (S), Paroxysmal/Affect (P) and Contact/Mood (C). These three Vectors of course generate the needs and strivings a particular Ego setting has to handle. Different Ego patterns have different modes of doing their moderation work, Later in clinical examples our experimental test findings will reflect the fact that an adult under sufficient pressure or stress may regress to the use of Ego patterns belonging to his childhood.

2011 YEAR THE EGO WAS REVUED, in Szondi's composed of the articulation of Catatonic and Paranoid ancestor set impulse strivings. Both 'Schizophrene' in exaggerated forms, thus coded "Sch" 

 I expect to rewrite this sections after I cover the other Vectors. Sexual/Gender, Paroxysmal/Emotional.

For the purpose of study, this table is useful as a reference, Far more useful and interesting is the Ego development (as [k] and [p] choices, generated by tested individuala) as demonstrated within  the contraints of the experimental test. {All prospective tests have constraints that need be recognized. A point easy to overlook.} These fndins thenpermit a visualization of the relative intensities of the drives that he test material seeks to measure, however in a schematic form, from which a experimentor may use to create his intrepretation of what he believes the results represents. To due this he must be aware of what similar results where associated with in other individuals and their normal or clinical history. The generalizations that are offered here are for that purpose, but are all so useful as psychological terms in themselves useful for any student of psychology, mental health, social work, education or related human behavior studies.

The Unfolding of the Ego.

Normally, Ego development takes place according to a detailed six stage schema as proposed by Susan Deri, "Introduction to the Szondi Test" [Grune & Strattion, N.Y. 1949. Her order is followed here, but the characterizations are arbitrarily revised into capsulations, for our study purposes. French Edition is currently in print. (Louvain University Press.)

1. (k0 p-)

Adualism: The indistinction between the ego and the other (up to one year). [See J. Paiget ] [In the adult it is called the 'paranoid Ego' and an indication of a regressive thought mode.

2. (k+ p-)

Childish Omnipotence: The magical-autistical omnipotence (pre-oedipian period). [See Melanne Kline's, not so benign view of infancy.] [See, J. Lancan," Mirror Phase"]

3. (± -)

Beginning accomidation, turbulence, resistance. (First Oedipian Separations) [See Winnicot ] [See Toilet Training, Early Care Takers.] [The "Restless Ego" of many talented Adults.]

Acceptance, accomidation (The pressure to conform and the social rewards, the latency period. [The Drill Ego of Adults-Suggesting that many never fully go beyond this mode of Ego development.]

If acceptance and accomidation is successful, the start of adolescence the young person may then try to replicate that which was accepted earler ['The Mild Compulsive Ego' when found in profiles, one or two decades later. ]

Adolescence. Mating impluse asserts on several levels and the desire previously repressed reaches consciousness backed by the newly aquired physical ability to do so. That this will meet with many set backs and frustrations, a well known feature of passing through adolesence. For many it will be the first serious Ego failure and the overwhelmed Ego may move to a kind of grid lock crises [k± p±] or what seems like a tuning off of thinking and feeling [k0 p0], or some will move back to older Ego settings with which they feel more secure however childish it may seem. Many show an appearance of [k+] and as well an awareness of depression [d+] as they restart a new search for fulfillment. In adults it is the 'Fully compulsive Ego'.

Comment.

For us as students of human nature, we ask what is it beyond this theoretical passage of the Ego that will address our desire to understand the larger issues and concerns in respect to ultimate behavior? What can we by this Szondi Test that offers insight in those humans who develop atypical or outright abnormal forms of existance?

The best answer I can offer now is, we can recast almost everything you previously believed to be psychologically caused, in the Szondi coding system, but our new metaphors also leave many who's and why's awaiting answer. The metaphors of the settings, and the strivings and what they represent are crafted from the unconscious choices by tested persons. This is done without extracting a verbal inventory, in fact you need not even speak the language of the tested subject, as long is he follows the choice procedure correctly.

The Szondian Ego

The constraints of the Szondi Test, filters out sixteen possible Ego's or Ego positions, if the Ego is conceived as largely built from the articulation of the two contrasting psychiatric strivings, 'schizophrene', Catatonia and Paranoia. Before you reject this notion, you need to see how well it works in practice.

Comment: Szondi's Ego psychology long hidden in the German texts and any would be investigator was advised not to waste his time on anything so stupid as the Szondi Test and some of the Hungarian Professor's (some said) differebt id not peculiar theories. As one follows Szondi's logic and tests it himself, most who are willing to go that far will begin to see there is more than unbridled speculation and generalization. There is a logical schematic core. The finds of the experimental test built it theories and then the theories organized themselves into an array, with similarities to the early table of periodic elements introduced by the Russian researcher, Mendeleev, who's chart by analog located the chemical elements, in such a way that certain elements, although rare or transient chemical existence were predicable, and with later technology detected.

The Ego (that which we think of as our" self", is according to Szondi defined by its four functions. Each these functions can be extended in other contexts as the Ego servers uniquely in humans, as to bridge and moderate all of a person's instinctual strivings by use of symbols and language. These functions have free interaction and balance for their proper function. [k+] Introjection. [k-] Repression. [p+] Rational participation. [p-] Unconscious projection. The Ego is represented by the opposing ego disorers "schizophrene" in human inheritance and therefor coded [Sch] in the Szondi Psychogram. The like and dislike of [k] and [p] reagent photos, (The Szondi Test ensemble) permits 16 possible combinations. Each believed to represent a persons Ego situation at the time he takes the test. A large amount of study has been made demographic and clinical to give meaning to a person’s sometimes steady and sometimes changing Ego related choices. For example tests pf persons in a state of mental crisis was often found to have, [k± p±] that is a same time like and dislike in both arms of the [k] and [p] factors. While a person regressing in mental strivings begin to show Ego patterns characteristic of childhood, such as;[k0 p-] or [k+ p-]
